Who You Know
Think back to when you were in high school. How did you get your first job? Did you aimlessly apply at places where you walked in as a complete stranger and get hired without knowing a single person there? Or did perhaps your friends work there, or your parents knew the manager, or someone you were familiar with put in a good word for you?
Most reading this will fall into the latter of the two categories. I got my first job because my neighbor who I crushed on worked there and she talked me up to the manager – despite never agreeing to go on a date with me. My second job I got because of a mutual connection introduced me to someone who worked there. I got another gig through a friend’s mom. My former marketing career was acquired thanks in great part to my college professor and mentor.
Now consider the modeling and talent industry. Do most models get bookings from complete strangers or are most jobs being given to models who know someone at the booking company or the ad agency or the production company or the photo company? Personally as a photographer, most of my work comes from those I know. Thus I do not chase jobs. I chase the opportunity to develop key relationships.
